How to care for chamedorea, and why a plant is best planted heap

With a tropical plant such as chamedorea, the interior of your home will never look boring. Juicy greens of a bamboo palm harmonize well with any decor. It not only decorates the room, but also absorbs toxins, being a natural filter. A useful plant with cleansing properties prevents bronchial diseases. A room palm is considered quite hardy and is ready to graciously forgive the grower for small mistakes. However, care and care for chamedorrhea at home should not be left to chance.

Perhaps the only drawback of the plant is too slow growth. However, this is a feature of all palm trees, to the family of which the Hamedorea belongs - a native inhabitant of the humid tropics. Among florists, it is also known as bamboo, reed or mountain palm. Hamedorea is widespread in Mexico, Guatemala, and the countries of South America, where there are comfortable climatic conditions for its growth. The palm tree attracts gardeners with beautiful cirrus leaves, creating the effect of tropical thickets. The plant is also valued for its high phytoncidal properties: its leaves are able to purify the air from many harmful chemical compounds.

Botanical features

Adult indoor chamedorrhea can grow up to 1-1.5 m. Usually, the maximum height of the plant does not exceed 60 cm. For splendor and spectacularity, a bushy, cirrus palm tree is planted in heaps: three or more plants in one pot. Chamedorrhea grows very slowly, releasing just two or three new branches in a year.

  • Trunk. Thin, straight, visually resembling bamboo stems. The branches have a diameter of two and a half to three centimeters.
  • Leaves. A distinctive feature of chamedorea leaves is a length of 40 to 60 cm, an openwork feathery shape. On each trunk, six to seven leaves are collected, collected in a rosette. Young foliage is pale green, with age it changes its “pale” shade to rich emerald. In a year, only one or two full leaves grow on a palm tree.
  • Flowers Being a dioecious plant, the home palm has fragrant male and female inflorescences. Chamedorea blooms at a young age, quite often, regardless of the time of year. Sufficiently long peduncles are produced from the leaf sinuses. Small and velvety yellow flowers of a chamedorea are similar to a mimosa. Inflorescences panicles are located along the entire length of the peduncle. Nondescript flowers do not represent any decorative effect, therefore experienced flower growers recommend removing them even during budding so as not to weaken the plant.
  • Fruit. After the flowering of chamedorea, small pea fruits are formed. Their size is no more than 6 mm in diameter. Berries when ripe become black. Inside each is one seed.
In their historic homeland, American Indigenous people eat unblown flowers of Chamedorea. Mostly they are used to add to salads.

Types and varieties of bamboo palm

Under natural conditions, the bamboo palm tree has more than a hundred varieties, but indoor varieties of chamedorea are much smaller. The most popular are five species.

  1. Hamedorea graceful. The variety is also known as Elegans, Hitmilis and Neanta beautiful. This is the most numerous variety, distinguished by its elegant appearance. A dense rosette of feather-like leaves rests on thin stems that can change color from green to brown over time. Chamedorea Elegans does not have a central trunk. Light yellow flowers have a pleasant aroma. Fruits appear as a result of artificial pollination.
  2. Hamedorea Ernest-Augustus. This ornamental plant is rare. It has a trunk, the top of which is crowned with a “hat” of a small amount of whole leaves (usually eight to ten). The leaf bifurcated at the ends is bizarre in shape, resembles a heart. As it grows, it begins to divide into segments. Maximum sheet size: 20-25 cm wide, 50-60 cm long. Ernesta Augusta flowers are intense red in color. Another characteristic feature is aerial roots, with the help of which the palm tree multiplies. Such chamedorea is the most magnificent and voluminous.
  3. Hamedorea high. The palm tree, which annually “throws out” giant three-meter “bamboo” stems. Leaves - pointed shape, the color of bright greenery. Orange flowers are collected in panicle inflorescences.
  4. Hamedorea is one-color. This is the most hardy and undemanding Chamaedorea, having signs of external resemblance to the elegant chamedorea. The variety is distinguished by a higher density of the bush, elongated internodes, thinner and longer leaves resembling reeds. In proportion, the branch with the leaves looks a little awkward. Interestingly, for the first time, a palm tree blooms when it reaches 70 years of age.
  5. Hamedorea metal. It has wide, leathery leaves, with a characteristic greenish-metallic color, which glisten in the sun with polished silver. Metallica's chamedorea occurs mainly among collectors.
Such rare types of chamedorea as Arenberg, Bridble, Martius, geonomoid, moon-shaped, broad-leaved, grass-leaved, cascading are considered to be collection. In flower shops, specimens are quite rare.

How to organize care for chamedorea at home

Growing hamedorea is not at all difficult. Proper placement, watering, optimal light and temperature, top dressing, pruning, transplanting - these are the main "moments" of caring for a room palm.

Location

A young chamedorea will be comfortable on the eastern or western windowsill, and an adult, overgrown palm tree is well placed in a corner by the window. In summer, the chamedorea needs to be carried out "breathing" on the balcony, terrace or garden. The only condition for this is protection from the scorching sun, rain, wind.

Given the high phytoncide properties of chamedorea, to improve indoor air quality it is not necessary to keep it alone, but it is better to group with plants that also cope well with the “air” cleaning function. This is dracaena, ficus, chlorophytum, spathiphyllum, pelargonium, heder.

Lighting

Hamedoreya is comfortable in partial shade or in bright but diffused light. In summer, a shade of light curtains is required from ten in the morning until five in the evening. A tropical palm tree normally tolerates northern windows and artificial lighting. To prevent the curvature of the stems and asymmetric growth of leaves, periodically turn the pot or tub with the plant in different directions to the light. Do it carefully.

Temperature

Bamboo palm tree loves warmth. The optimal temperature in summer days is 22-27 ° C. Features of caring for chamedorrhea in winter suggest maintenance at a temperature of 12-18 ° C. A thermometer colder than 12 ° C is fatal for chamedorrhea.

Providing the cane palm with living conditions at an average temperature corresponding to the “residential” one, try not to allow sharp jumps in its indicators, drafts or cold air currents during ventilation.

Air humidity

Humidity is the most important aspect of caring for chamedorea - a resident of tropical forests.The higher it is, the better. If the leaves of Hamedorea turn yellow, "leaf fall" has begun, which means that the room has very dry air. Focus on 80%. Saturate the air with moisture, using containers with water, trays with wet moss or wet sea pebbles, special humidifiers. Hamedorea will also be grateful for daily spraying. This procedure is also necessary in the winter months when heating is on. Also, once a decade, wipe the leaves from dust, “bathe” the plant under a slightly warm shower.

Watering

In hot summers and during the growing season, chamedorea requires abundant watering. Use settled water at room temperature. Do not allow deep drying of the earthen coma, but do not flood. Excess moisture is fraught with the development of rot. It is recommended to water the bamboo palm as soon as the top layer of soil begins to dry.

Doubt the degree of soil moisture? Slightly dig your finger into the soil. The surface should be dry, a deeper layer - wet or wet.

Soil requirements

To grow a healthy plant, the roots need to create a favorable breeding ground. Chamedorea needs a light, loose soil mixture. The best option is to purchase universal soil for palm trees. In order to independently prepare the soil mixture, peat, river sand, turf soil, humus are taken in equal parts. It is better to sterilize the last two components before planting the chamedorea by calcining in the oven.

Pot selection

When choosing a pot for indoor chamedorea, prefer clay and ceramic to plastic. It is important that the capacity is high and stable. An ideal habitat for a bamboo palm is a classic tub.

Top dressing

Although the plant is undemanding and well tolerates even scarce soil, stimulate its growth with fertilizers. The feeding season is from spring until the arrival of autumn. The easiest way to feed chamedorea is to use a solution of mineral fertilizers for palm trees several times a month. When using tools, be sure to adhere to the instructions.

The first six months the transplanted palm does not fertilize. Adult chamedorea to maintain soil nutrition can be fed in the winter. Use drugs in a highly diluted proportion.

Pruning

The owner of the beauty-chamedorea will have to become her personal hairdresser. If you do not want your palm to resemble a broom, periodically give it the desired shape. Also, the procedure involves the removal of sick, damaged, dried leaves. Place the sections sprinkled with powdered activated or charcoal, sometimes treated with fungicides.

Transplant Rules

Bamboo palm is a plant that does not like any external interference. Transplantation is very stressful for chamedorrhea and should be done no more than once every three to four years. Please note that the need for transplantation is not associated with an increase in the size of the palm itself. In this case, it is enough to pour the earth mixture into the pot annually. The reason for replacing it with a larger one should be the full filling of the container with roots.

If the chamedorea is planted too tightly and visually looks quite voluminous, it can be divided into two or three groups, planted in several pots.

Experienced flower growers do not recommend transplanting Hamedorea immediately after purchase, for a start she needs to settle down in a new environment. After a two-week adaptation period, a palm tree that is very susceptible to exposure of the roots is transplanted using the transshipment method. Pre-moisten the soil in the transport pot to remove the plant without difficulty. For successful transshipment, follow five recommendations:

  • fill the bottom of the new pot with drainage - to a height of 5 cm, and then about 10 cm add sterilized soil;
  • gently pull the chamedorea out of the pot - it is important not to destroy the lump with roots;
  • cut the roots with a sharp knife - you need to trim rolled up, thin roots that look like felt;
  • put a palm tree in a pot - fill the free space with soil, compact;
  • pour freshly transplanted chamedorea - water at room temperature, and for a couple of weeks protect it from the midday sun by organizing moderate watering.

3 ways to breed

The bamboo palm tree looks like an interior classic, bringing elegance and grace to the living room, bedroom. Therefore, the desire of the owners of this impressive tropical plant to propagate the hamedoria is understandable. Three growing options are known: from seeds, cuttings, dividing the bush.

Sprouts of Hamedorea

Seeds

Features Growing chamedorea from seeds at home is not the most effective way of propagation. The germination period is quite long: from two to eight months. Only fresh seeds give good germination, so always be interested in the expiration date of the purchased seed. You can get seeds yourself only after artificial pollination.

Instruction manual

  1. Pre-soak the seeds of chamedorea for five days. Prepare disposable glasses, make drainage holes in them.
  2. Carry out the mechanical scarification of the seeds: Using a small file or sandpaper, carefully break the upper hard shell. According to gardeners, such an operation stimulates germination: the seeds gain moisture faster and swell.
  3. Pour the soil into disposable cups (the approximate level is one and a half centimeters below the edge). Press the seeds with the sawed side into the soil to a depth of one or two centimeters. Do not sprinkle with earth.
  4. Pour, cover with polyethylene to create greenhouse conditions.
  5. Usually the seeds germinate after a couple of months. When the first leaf grows to a size of two to four centimeters, seedlings can be planted in separate pots.
Chamedorea grown from seeds begins to bloom at the age of three or four. By this time, the palm should grow to 25-30 cm.

Dividing the bush

Features Propagation of chamedorea by division is suitable for large, highly grown plants. This is the fastest breeding method used in the process of palm transplantation.

Instruction manual

  • Take the plant out of the pot, gently brush off the soil.
  • Cut off unhealthy roots (dry or rotten).
  • “Unwind” the roots at the joints, gently separate them with a sharp knife. In no case should you tear the plant. For further planting, shoots with a minimum of three to four roots are suitable.
  • Scions of five pieces plant in suitable pots, leave in partial shade. Covering the container with polyethylene and organizing the lower heating, provide the hamedorea bushes with high temperature and humidity.
  • Every day, two to three times moisten the "seedlings" from the spray gun. Water when the topsoil is completely dry.
  • New sprouts will need one to two months to adapt. Take care of it like adult palm trees.

Basal processes

Features Hamedorea has a rare property for palm trees to reproduce vegetatively. The best time for such a procedure is the end of winter-spring. Having decided to propagate chamedorea with cuttings, be prepared that not all plants will take root.

Instruction manual

  1. Separate the shoot together with strong, formed roots from the mother plant (cuttings without a developed root system will not survive).
  2. At the bottom of the pot pour a drainage, a little soil.
  3. On the separated branches, straighten the roots and plant them in a pot. Add earth and tamp well.
  4. Organize the bottom soil heating and cover with foil to create a greenhouse effect.
  5. Before rooting, spray chamedorea daily, protect it from sunburn.

The consequences of improper care

Home palm trees, despite the ease of care, sometimes get sick. This is reflected in their decorativeness. Problems may arise due to improper content. Timely measures taken will return the tropical beauty to health and attractiveness. The table will help you understand the mistakes of care, choose a treatment method.

Table - Mistakes in caring for chamedorea

ProblemCare MistakesHow to help
Blacken, dry leaves- Inadequate watering;
- chamedorea is watered with hard water;
—Water contains toxic elements: chlorine, fluorine
- Cut the “problem” areas;
- increase the irrigation of chamedorea using settled, filtered water (preferably rain)
Yellow stripes and spots on the leaves of hamedorea- The palm tree lacks potassium or magnesium- Nourish the plant by spraying the leaves of Hamedorea with a solution of trace elements;
- feed the palm with compost (a layer of two to three centimeters);
- add magnesium sulfate crystals to water for irrigation of chamedorea
The new leaves of the chamedorea are very small- deficit of light;
- lack of fertilizer
- Increase the light;
- feed your palm more often
Yellowish shade of foliage- Excess of the sun;
- iron deficiency
- Move the chamedorea to the shaded place;
- carry out foliar top dressing of palm with iron-containing soluble fertilizers

Diseases and their treatment

The normal development of a room palm becomes impossible with an infectious infection. Therefore, ideas about how to care for chamedorea should include knowledge of help in a difficult period. Pests, eating the juice of a flower, deprive the palm of beneficial substances. The primary measure should be the isolation of a diseased plant. Then immediately proceed to determine the diagnosis and treatment of chamedorrhea. The main symptoms are presented in the table below.

Table - Diseases and pests of chamedorrhea

Disease / pestSymptomsPrevention and control
Aphid- Pale, weakened leaves
- The first week, carefully remove the aphids by hand;
- if the method is ineffective - fight with insecticides
Spider mite- Dull, yellow spots;
- dark puncture points on the foliage;
- web on the back;
- drying, falling of leaves
- Wipe the leaves with a sponge soaped with laundry soap, rinse after three hours;
- Increase air humidity, do not forget about spraying;
- cut the most affected leaves;
- use chemicals: acaricides and insectoacaricides
Thrips- Silvery, translucent leaves;
- shiny black drops on the foliage (thrips highlight)
- Treat with systemic insecticides "Aktara" or "Confidor" according to the instructions;
- remember that a warm shower in the fight against thrips is ineffective: this procedure will not save the black-headed bugs
Mealybug- White spots on the shoots;
- sugar sticky discharge;
- leaves turn pale and fall off
- Treat affected areas with soapy water;
- Once every few days, remove parasites with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol (until they disappear completely);
- weekly process infusion of tobacco or garlic;
- once a week spray the leaves with “Vertimek”
Root rot (late blight or pitium)- The leaves turn yellow first, then darken;
- the palm tree fades;
- necrotic areas appear on the roots
- Remove the chamedorea from the pot, cut off all diseased and damaged parts;
- Place the palm for 15 minutes in a fungicide solution;
- Sprinkle the slices with activated carbon powder, then place in a new pot with fresh soil;
- after transplanting for seven to ten days, water the chamedorea with a solution of fungicide ("Khometsin", "Kuprozan")
Stalk rot- Wet spots with a white coating- Remove all infected leaves;
- transplant chamedorea in the same way as with root rot;
- if the disease affects the entire plant, throw the plant along with the pot

Not only knowledge on how to care for chamedorea in a pot is important, but also recommendations on how to choose the right bamboo palm in a flower shop. Pay attention to the freshness and health of foliage, the presence of a new growth. Keep in mind that tall palm trees are very expensive due to slow growth. Get three small plants at once: compact bushes are cheaper. Immediately plant them together, slowly grow your lush tropical "oasis".

Reviews: “Real mini-jungle on the windowsill”

I bought Hamedorea with a small lush bush - even one pot with this plant perfectly enlivens the windowsill. And if she is in a group, then the whole mini-jungle is obtained! In the couple of years that I have it, many new leaves have grown and many old ones have dried up - but my chamedorea has remained a lush bush 30 cm high. Chamedorea is ideal for northern windows - she does NOT like the sun, even if it shines on it only 3-4 hours in the morning. If the windows are on other sides of the world - it requires mandatory shading. But you can safely put this palm somewhere in the room, and not on the windowsill.

I bought this palm about 3 years ago. There were three large sheets in a small pot. He didn’t transplant, grew slowly, began to languish. It somehow cooled down. Sent to the windowsill to the parents. It turned yellow, some sticky coating appeared on top, and white below. He removed it manually, but he reappeared. Mom, despite my requests, simply flooded the palm tree with water, and therefore she began to rot. The plant was no longer a tenant. Yellow leaves. They proposed to process the actar. Presumably wound up shields. In the month of May of this year, I decided to transplant it into the first suitable unnecessary bucket and send it to the balcony for the summer. Palma thanked. It has grown rapidly and now when the beginning of November is releasing new leaves. Some process, like I say, and I can still bloom. Leaves with white bloom due to the fact that he sprayed with fertilizers. In general, the palm is recovering, which suggests that the plant is very hardy. I advise everyone to try. It’s still not Benjamin’s ficus, which in winter, what’s not to be done, discards the leaves, because you need coolness, This palm is hardy.

Evmen, http://irecommend.ru/content/bystro-rastet-pytaetsya-tsvestifoto-moei

Hamedorea is a small palm tree. For the first time, I became closely acquainted with this plant in my mother-in-law (she had chamedorea easily and joyfully, scrubbed and dropped ball-seeds). My husband is not wildly delighted with my passion for flowers, but he wanted to start a chamedorea. I bought a flower in Magnet; there were a lot of small palm trees in the pot. I immediately planted it and distributed it to my friends (almost all of the palms took root). I left one for myself. During the year, the palm tree tried to grow many times (released new leaves), but my cat just hunts for it and eats it. It’s good that I didn’t bite off the growth zone (right away advice: hide the chamedorea from cats, they like it very much). She put the hamedorea on a shelf and now I am waiting for new leaves. The flower is very elegant and beautiful, shade-tolerant, I recommend it to everyone.
